The extraordinary life of Maria Branyas Morera, who lived to the age of 117, is offering scientists valuable insights into what helps people age more gracefully and live longer. Born in 1907 in the United States and later moving to Spain, Maria remained mentally sharp and relatively healthy throughout much of her life. Before her passing in 2024, she generously agreed to donate her biological data to scientific research, hoping it would help experts better understand why some individuals far exceed the average lifespan.

Researchers from the University of Barcelona and the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute studied her DNA and found several unique genetic traits. Their analysis revealed characteristics linked to strong cellular function and a reduced risk of age-related diseases. According to scientists, Maria’s biology appeared to slow certain processes commonly associated with aging. Many of her inflammation markers and metabolic patterns resembled those of people much younger.
